Chapter 3 out today (and PDFs updated) (18 March 2019)

The DfT website is now allowing you to download PDFs of all the new chapters (1, 3, 4, 5 and 7). Chapter 3 (the only one dated 2019) is not yet showing as available to buy from the TSO Shop, so the PDF is the only way to get it at the moment. More to follow when I've had a chance to look at the new Chapter 3.

SimonMorgan March 15 2019 These two chapters have appeared this morning on the TSO website as published today and available for dispatch. They are still described as "2018 edition", as that's presumably what's on the cover. Chapter 7 is much expanded with all the important directional signs from the 2002 TSRGD illustrated (so you can now put that document to bed). It's also got guidance on the new forms of dedicated lane signs, tourist gateway signs, and advice for bilingual signing in Wales and Scotland. Chapter 5 is somewhat slimmer than before, as most regulatory markings have been moved to Chapter 3 (expected very soon). As a result, the changes needed for it to work with the 2016 TSRGD are fairly minimal - mainly inserting the new Sx-y-z form of referencing. I understand that the PDF versions should also be available pretty soon.

It appeared on the DfT website this moning (23 Feb). The cover originally had the year "2009" on it, but that's now been corrected. You can download it here.

The graphics are not as good as other chapters and parts, presumably because CAD was used in their production, rather than the crisp vector graphics that are available with a different leading sign design package!

At the IHE Traffic Signs 2018 conference today, DfT speakers produced printed copies of these new chapters. They can now be ordered from TSO, but I couldn't see them yet on the TSO website. PDFs (with hyperlinks) to follow in due course.

Chapter 1 has more emphasis on reducing sign clutter, as expected. But the biggest surprise is perhaps the reappearance of the water depth indicator for use at fords in Chapter 4, with the note that it now needs to be authorised by the relevant national authority.

Simon is there any further news on updates to the above TSMs to take into account TSRGD 2016? I think it was initially suggested that Chapt 3 might be out around Mar but maybe I got that wrong.

Can anyone please advise whether Chapters 12 (Sign Maintenance) and 13 (Sign Construction and Mounting) are withdrawn, superseded or still relevant ? I am aware that in the most up to date Chapter 7 (2013) only Chapters 1 to 8 are listed.

I am asking as we still refer to 12 and 13 in Appendix 12/1 of our contract specification.

Chapter 8 Part 3 U7.2 Diversion Signing

Problems I have with this section are:

-The update makes continual references to signs (2702-2707) which are superseded by TSRGD Schedule 13 Part 9 thus the references are not current.
- A fundamental requirement of diversion route signing is to initiate the route with a "Diversion" sign (old TSRGD ref: 2702) yet U7.2.6 advises they are not suitable for high speed roads due to their small size, with graphics indicating they are to be omitted. I think this is wrong. TSRGD permits signs with xht's from 35-400mm. Diversion routes should always start with a "Diversion" sign (unless D3.15.10 is revoked/out of date).
-The road closed signs and exit closed signs do not comply with Schedule 13 Part 9 paragraph 8 either. The signs should be red/white.

I would appreciate peoples views on this.
