Afternoon,

I'm looking for some guidance on the sign attached that needs replaced. I'm looking at renewing the sign but changing the wording on the no entry's supplemental plate to Except Buses but I can't see any guidance on this type of thing.
Am I permitted to have Except Buses below the no entry symbol on an ADS sign?
What x-height would be used for or how do I calculate it, if the x-height of the ADS signs is 100mm?

Thank you.

TSRGD S12-20-45 allows you to place an "Except buses" plate below the No entry roundel on a directional sign.
To place "Except authorised buses" would require authorisation.
The "16" and "3.2" figures alongside the illustrations in TSRGD are the diameter of the roundel and the 'x' height of the text on the plate respectively, both in stroke widths.
So at 100mm 'x' height the roundel would be 400mm diameter and the 'x' height of "Except buses" would be 80mm (i.e. 80% of the main 'x' height of the sign if the sign is designed at 100mm 'x' height.
See TSM Chapter 7, Sections 5.17 and 5.18 for further design details.

Hi Stephen
That sign can be made a lot more compact, and there shouldn't be a point on the route arm beyond the 'no entry' symbol.
But Andy has answered your question. Any plate that is permitted under a regulatory sign is also allowed on an ADS, and as he says, the plate (including its text and borders) is designed at 80% of the x-height of the other lettering on the sign. Any of the leading sign design software packages (such as SignPlot) will take care of this for you.
Though if only service buses (i.e. 'local buses') are entitled to pass the no entry sign (not visiting coaches) then you might well omit the plate from the directional sign as it is only informatory, and bus drivers on their regular route can be expected to know of the exemption.
