Good afternoon,

I'm currently looking at design of a cantilevered sign and I'd appreciate if anybody ahs experience of designing something like this. The project which I am currently working on involves the cantilevering of the attached flag direction sign to reclaim the available footway width for pedestrians. I was wondering if there was a standard detail for this or a guidance document which would assist me in the design.

Hi George,

There are a couple of options here, all would require sign size, location, mounting height etc. Have you considered redesigning the sign with a backing board so the chevron end is "square" which would make for easier mounting, and closer to the back of footway? Options available are:

1) Use a larger sized square or rectangular post which has the plate offset over the footway. You can use the standard post/foundation design packages to see if this is suitable.

2) Some of the post suppliers can assist with a cantilever option, such as ATP (sales@alltrafficproducts.co.uk).

3) Alternatively, a structural engineer would be able to design a bespoke design, which you could then get manufactured and installed.

I hope this helps, Chris

I concur with what Chris says. I've also got a couple of extremely old Standard Details which may be of use. I've tried to upload them but sadly with no success!

That sign could be made a little smaller, particularly if the traffic speed is low. Is the text necessary, or does the symbol say it all? Reducing the size a little would certainly make it an option for mounting on a single (preferably rectangular, as Chris says) post, with conventional channels. Buchanan/Causeway SignLoad software would confirm whether that was possible, and would tell you if you needed an extra channel on the back of the sign for that arrangement.
