Morning
In Norfolk we have used an Access database for may years to monitor stock levels, details of theoretical usage, route usage within tolerance, sand/salt mix usage, gritter performance etc. The database underpins most other reporting too for Winter operations. Going forward we need to find another way of recording the information as the NCC ICT Team no longer support Microsoft Access. I wonder whether any other members have a bespoke salt management system already in operation or if not how do they manage salt stocks and other the winter related information required as detailed above.
Thanks

Thanks Simon from Warwickshire! We do use Compass and use this method to order/monitor stock. What this doesn't give us is the route/vehicle usage information though. How do you manage that?

Can you still use MS Excel. if so try and export the Access data into Excel. This may work but depends on how much data there is and how its then used.

From a National Highways perspective we have developed a bespoke reporting system SWIS severe weather Information Service. it pulls both National weather forecast data via our MO contract, RBF winter forcasts from metdesk, flood alerts and weather warnings as well. We also monitor or 250+ ESS network through it, and can see all them in the system, we also track all 443 winter fleet through it. We can enter actions and align all activities to it is also gives us national overview of salt usage. Whilst this may be too much for a LHA to develop we do have to have key data to make it all work. we have 383 routes of which 303 are ours to manage all have salt and brine usage theoretically calculated for all the spreadrates we use, this is in excel, so we can plot them against acutals in the system. At present we have a comprehensive winter maintenance spreadsheet which in part is completed at a depot level but also can be used to confirm any data in SWIS and data from Exactrak, darren.clark@nationalhighways.co.uk
