Good afternoon,

In Southampton we use the NWSRG spread rate guide in Section 8 for spread rates for Precautionary Salting and ive noticed a change in matrix 8.6.7.

On line -2.1 to -3.0 under the 'good section' on a Wet Road, the recommendation is 13g/m but on the latest document its showing as 8g/m. Can you confirm this is correct.

Also is there a definition for 'fair' and 'good ' for Spreader Capability?

Thank you in advance.

Hi John, thanks for your queries. I have just quickly checked the matrix at Paragraph 8.6.7 of the current version of the guidance and can confirm that the 8 g/m2 recommended dry salt spread rate for conditions of: -2.1C to -3.0C; wet road; and ‘Good’ spreader capability, is correct. This table was improved when we updated the previous (superseded) version by increasing the precision of the temperature ranges used in the spread rate matrices to steps of one degree Celsius. This increased precision is hopefully assisting authorities in further reducing the amount of salt they spread. The previous version of the matrix only had a single row covering temperatures from -2.1C down to -5.0C and, as you say, the relevant recommended spread rate in that version was 13g/m2 for a wet road and ‘Good’ spreader capability. The difference between the two rates is therefore a result of the different temperature ranges that they apply to. The definitions of ‘Good’ and ‘Fair’ spreader capability are discussed in Section 6 of the current version of the Guide, entitled ‘Spreader Management’. I hope this helps! Adrian

Hi Adrian, thank you so much for the quick response and answering both questions. I have now updated our spread rate guide and reviewed Section 6 Spreader Management and now understand how 'Good' and 'Fair' spreader capability is defined and what the procedure is to check/audit this. Many thanks, John
